CITY BIRDS

i hear you
in the audio messages
of my friends

a giggle in the background
talking of spring
before we even notice it

i watch you
from my window
assembling a nest with infinite care

when the wind blows hard
and the tree sways
i hold my breath

i admire you
planing with impossible grace
over my roof

a sublime elegance
which would humble us all
if only we looked closer

i love your voices
cooing, chirping, singing
upon waking up

discussing things
god only knows
so passionately

i love you!
always had
but now i can articulate it

walking at night
through this city
in spring

i hear you
shouting and whistling
on top of your lungs

walking sleepily
in the early mornings
of the summer

i greet the day
and its infinite blessings
with your chirping

i notice
your absence
when the fall is upon us

always too late
i forgot to say goodbye
this year too

i weep for you
when your honking
takes my eyes to the sky

good luck my brave
my beautiful
my strong and delicate friends

i will miss you
again
in the cold long winter

and i will smile
grateful
at those who could stay.
